My review of Precision Nutrition’s ProCoach nutrition for exercise program:
How does it work?
It is a year long nutrition program, which has been researched and tested by over 45,000 clients and perfected over 10 years.
- You will have access to a Precision Nutrition certified coach
- You will receive regular coaching to change habits
- Lessons will be delivered daily
- Good quality resources are included
The launch of ProCoach was in June 2016 and this is a review of my first 3 months on the program. When I gained my PN level 1 certification in January it was with the sole purpose of being able to add exercise nutrition coaching to my services, at that point there was no ProCoach and no intention of me following any ‘crazy diet’. However a few months later Precision Nutrition had launched the ProCoach program and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it! Coaching clients would be so much easier with this state of the art software, but just one minor detail, it was advised that coaches should go through the whole process first to understand better what their clients will be experiencing.
Okay, so here goes!
Once you sign up you’re instructed that the program will commence on the following Monday, this was a blessing, it gave me a few days to get my head around the fact that things were going to be a bit different from here on in. The initial intake questionnaire soon made me realize that this program is focused on long term sustainable behaviour change and tailored to your specific needs.
Each morning you are sent an email where you can log in to ProCoach and access your daily lesson and you have the option of reading or listening to it. Once completed, you must then indicate whether you have adopted the current habit. The lessons are normally no longer than 10 minutes in duration and often include extra video clips and written resources that can be downloaded and kept for future reference. The habits tend to last for 2 weeks, giving you time to adapt to and ingrain the new behavior. This is where your coach comes in, he/she is there to keep you on track and going in the right direction through the program and at your own pace.
- Weight loss
- Lower blood pressure
- Stronger cycling performance
- Better nutrient dense food choices
- Significant reduction in girth measurements
- No meal plans
- Year long program
- Cost (from $137.50 a month)
Is ProCoach worth the money?
From the perspective of someone that is fairly knowledgeable about exercise and nutrition, very active and within the BMI healthy weight guidelines, for what they are worth, I would have to say yes! I think I’m a fairly fit fifty something, so for me to lose 6 kilos and drop below eighty kilos for the first time in over twenty years, coupled with a reduction of twelve inches in girth measurement, that’s an average of an inch a week for the first 3 months of the program, there is no doubt the program is worth it.
For the most part, your regular body transformation program would stop right here and from the statistics above you might say, job well done. The weight loss is cool, but the key to the Precision Nutrition powered system is long-term sustainable behaviour change. ProCoach is a huge commitment and you have to make the time to complete the daily lessons and analyze and adjust your relationship towards food and how that interrelates with the rest of your life.
My cycling has moved on to a whole new level due to the weight loss and increase in performance. I feel the biggest benefit however has been the lowering of my blood pressure, it’s the real reason that the long duration of the program is appealing to me, I know that at some point I need to stop eating like a teenager as my BP level has always been around the normal to high level.
My belief is that by writing this review and then having quarterly catch ups it will provide some accountability for me to keep myself on track.
